How to reach Monte Cavallo Shelter
If you arrive by car from Bologna: highway A1, exit Sasso Marconi, direction Pistoia-Porretta Terme (SS64); pass Porretta Terme, reach Ponte della Venturina, at the traffic lights turn right into the SP632; pass Molino del Pallone, after about 1 km turn right, direction Monte Cavallo. Once passed Casa Boni, go left, at the next crossing keep right, and follow the route to the Shelter.
If you arrive by car from Pistoia: direction Abetone, at Ponte Petri turn right towards Pracchia; follow the main street, 500 m after Randaragna turn left, pass Casa Boni, keep left, at the next crossing keep right, and follow the route to the Shelter.
If you arrive by train from Bologna: take the train to Porretta Terme, get off at Porretta station, take the train to Pistoia, get off at Molino del Pallone, take the CAI 199 path (5,1 kms, a drop of 850 metres, for excursionists, 2,45 hours’ walk). If you prefer, at Porretta Terme you can take the CAI 103 path (9,8 kms, a drop of 1140 metres, for excursionists, 4 hours’ walk).
If you arrive by train from Pistoia: take the train to Porretta Terme, get off at Molino del Pallone, take the CAI 199 path (5,1 kms, a drop of 850 metres, for excursionists, 2,45 hours’ walk). If you prefer, get off at Porretta and take the CAI 103 path (9,8 kms, a drop of 1140 metres, for excursionists, 4 hours’ walk).
Bikes can be carried on all the trains.
